House with an earth floor, large repairs for the 500th year : #0402
		By fitting a glass door into the inside, the courtyard, with a 200 years old plum tree and the middle earth floor are changed with the opening of the space. This house had been renovated several times before and was damaged dramatically. This renovation was included as part of this repair. The rain water leak was found from the roof and the colums and the beams are covered by the new materials of the wall and ceilling. The wood frame was left visible and the loft floor was added on to part of void in the roof space. It is not only the middle earth floor and the inner garden that are connected, but also the kitchen in the earth floor was changed to the barrier to eliminate the ground level. the gate, the outside wall and the isolated tea hose... We hope this house with earth floor will stay a long time. PLAN

When the glass sliding door is open, the inner garden and the middle earth floor change...The white wall (called Sekabe) is merged into the old house...The space in front of the wall is used as a stage...The step made from diatomite is in the earth floor... Looking down at the Doma space ...The white wall is lit up from under the flooring... Looking up at the ceiling from the living room. The ceiling is covered ceder woods. The sliding door on the courtyard becomes one large space which includes the earth floor... The beam close to the edge of the roof was decayed due to rain water leaking. It was difficult to find the large material for the beam. However, I could find it in Awaji island... Removing the rotten part of the beam, After that new beam is added to the removed part...	Middle earth floor The finishes of the middle earth floor are diatomite... Living room / The white wall (called Sekabe) is on the left of the image. The earth floor is just behind the wall... The flooring is made from old Japanese red pine, Each flooring panel is quite wide. and they match the house very well... looking down at the living room from the mezzanin. There was no connection to the garden ...So the sliding door is created in this place to connect the inner garden to the earth floor... Old house with an earth floor The large pine beam in log form was discovered in the roof-space. This beam had supported the house for approximately 500 years...I made use of the existing structure to make good use of its material...
